The layout is inspired by Vietnamese ghost money (joss paper) designs. The ghost money is what we used to burn to worship our ancestors or people in the family who have passed. It’s a symbol of gift-giving and wishing well and fortune. The illustrations designs are inspired from Vietnamese Altars. Altars are used for worshipping in Vietnam, it’s often made by wood with very delicate carvings.

These wood carving patterns are use again in the website layout. They are used as a staple decor piece on the left as the user scroll through the website. Throughout the writing, footnotes will be shown by hovering on the arrow on the left side after a paragraph. Highlighted texts are also displayed on the left side of the screen. The drop down menu stapled on the right is for easy navigation to other chapters.
